Chapter Fourteen

Nathan came to sitting up, with his arms and his legs duct-taped to a chair. His vision was blurred and nerve endings throughout his body lit up the pain receptors in his brain. The blows had rained down all over, but what stood out most notably was the throbbing welt on his head. Despite that, he managed to examine his surroundings as best he could. It appeared to be a back room at the Horse and Hound, with dart boards on one wall and a pool table at the far end. Surrounding him were most of the men from the courtyard fight, at least those who hadn’t been rushed off for medical attention. That meant eight of them, plus one more he hadn’t yet seen standing directly in front of him. Toward the back and trying to keep a low profile was the young man Nathan had seen downtown, hanging around in the aftermath of the One Tower bombing. Watching over the proceedings impassively from a seat at the bar was Suzanne. Directly beside Nathan and taped to another chair was Natalia, awake but pissed and straining at her restraints, eager to tear into them all over again.

“Wakey, wakey,” the new man said to Nathan. He was tall and solidly built, wearing green pants and a blue coat. On his head was a faded felt hat with a brim that drooped on one side. The man’s fingernails were each painted a different color, red, blue, green, yellow… In his left hand was a shiny .38 caliber revolver. Nathan was still a little groggy, but he could see right away that this man had an electric charisma. It was evident in the man’s glee, the way he carried himself, and the spark in his eyes. This was a man profoundly confident in himself and his unique place in the world. Nathan had seen the type. They drew various reactions. For many people, an iconoclastic rule-breaker like this made them mildly uncomfortable. Sometimes majorly so. For another subset of the population, a man like this offered freedom from traditional thinking and the possibility to follow a different, previously unthinkable path. To that subset, a man like this one could be extremely persuasive, especially if he was telling them what they already wanted to hear, giving permission to follow their hidden instincts. The perfect cult leader.

“Dante,” Nathan said.

“Bravo!” The man seemed impressed, turning to share this sentiment with the others in the room. “My reputation preceeds me!”

Nathan shifted his attention to Natalia. “Are you all right?” he asked her.

“She’s fine,” Dante answered. “It’s you we were more concerned about. That gash on your head, tsk, tsk, very painful, no doubt. We weren’t entirely sure you’d wake up at all.”

“One more murder to the list, eh?”

“Now, that’s not fair! Not fair at all! You two are the ones who attacked us, isn’t that right?” He looked around at his men once more and received nods in return.

“That’s right,” one of them confirmed. “We’s
